Information

AquaEd is Stevenage Leisure Limited’s recognised brand for quality swimming lessons. Classes range from 6 months – 3 years old for both adult and child. With children’s lessons fun through the ASA’s national teaching plan, these are levels 1 – 12.

Adult beginners and improvers are also catered for.

All of our teachers are ASA qualified and regularly attend up-date courses to improve standards.

AquaEd Ducklings

Adult and child (Ducklings) 6 months to 2 years

Adult and child (Ducklings) 2 years to 3 years

The teacher will guide the adults to help the child to gain confidence and water skills. Toys will be used to encourage enjoyment.

Level 1 and Level 2

These are divided into 2 age groups:

3 – 4 years and 5 years plus

Ages are taken on the first day of term and these will be adhered to i.e. age 4 on first day of term will be in 3 – 4 year age group. Age 5 on second day of term will also be in 3 – 4 year age group.

Level 1

This course is for the child just out of Ducklings requiring aids to swim. They will achieve 5 metres on their front and back unaided along with various water skills. Toys will be used to encourage enjoyment.

Level 2

This course is for the child who can swim 5 metres front crawl and back crawl unaided and can put their faces in the water with lots of confidence. They will achieve 10 metres front crawl and 10 metres back crawl unaided. Breaststroke leg action and attempt dolphin leg action.

Level 3

For the child who can swim 10 metres front crawl and back crawl. They will achieve forward rolls, breaststroke to a recognised stroke and 25 metres front and back crawl.

Level 4

For the child who can swim 25 metres front crawl and 25 metres back crawl. They will achieve tuck floats, picking objects up from the floor of the pool with eyes open and no goggles.

Level 5

For the child who can swim 25 metres front crawl with breathing to the side, 25metres back crawl and perform on tuck floats. They will achieve head first sculling. Kicking on all 3 strokes without a float and 50 metres front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke (with feet turned out).

Level 6

For the child who has or is able to complete level 5. In this level they will achieve treading water, swimming under water for 5 metres. Picking objects up from the bottom of the pool in deep water without the use of goggles. 100 metres front crawl and backstroke.

Level 7

For the child who has or is able to complete level 6. In this level they will be working towards efficient leg kick for front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Also performing straddle jumps.

Level 8

For the child who has or is able to complete level 7. In this level they will be working towards an efficient front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. We will also be introducing butterfly.

Level 9

For the child who has or is able to complete level 8. In this level they will work towards effective stroke techniques. It will also include torpedo sculling.

Level 10

For the child who has or is able to complete level 9. In this level children will improve their butterfly to a recognised standard with arms clearing the water. We will also be introducing competitive turns.

Level 11 and 12

For the child who has or is able to complete level 10. These lessons are ¾ of an hour long and are aimed at improving competitive stroke technique including starts and turns.

Please see our notice board for latest information. We run lessons for all ages and abilities Monday – Saturday. Crash courses will run during school holidays. Please ask at reception for available spaces and times.

Rules and regulations

For a happy and safe swimming lesson environment.

  • ALL lifeguards on duty will hold the RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification.
  • ALL teachers will hold ASA teacher certificate, continuous professional development certificate for the national teaching plan and a minimum ASA teachers rescue test.
  • If your child is in swimming lessons and is 8 years old or under you must remain in the building at all times.
  • ALL children attending an adult and child lesson must wear a swim nappy.
  • Boys must not wear swim shorts as these create water resistance. Only tight fitting lycra or swimming trunks are allowed. (This also applies to school swimming lessons). If your child turns up in swim shorts they will not be allowed to join in the class.
  • ALL children must remove all jewellery before the start of the lesson this includes stud earrings. (This also applies to school swimming lessons).
  • ALL adults and children must shower before entering the pool.
  • ALL children must wear swim hats. These are issued at the start of term. If they are lost or broken new ones must be purchased from reception.

How to enrol

All existing pupils will receive a report on their progress and a priority enrolment form at the end of term. This must be handed into reception before noon on the last day of term together with full payment and a stamp addressed envelope.

If you wish to enrol a new pupil you must leave your name, telephone number and child’s swimming ability at reception during the preceding half term to be added to our interest list. If we have any places available for the next term we will try to contact you prior to the start of term after all existing pupils have had places allocated to them.
