Set in China, the classic Arabian Nights Tale will be full of festive fun from Saturday 28th November 2009 to Sunday 24th January 2010, and it will have all the magical ingredients you expect including lavish costumes, stunning sets and amazing effects.
Aladdin, a street urchin, is sent by a sorcerer to get a magic lamp from a cave, which he later finds out, is protected by a curse. He is so angry that he keeps the lamp unaware there is a genie inside who gives him three wishes. However, Aladdin selfishly uses the wishes to become rich and marry a princess.
The Gordon Craig is very excited this year to be welcoming John Altman, who is best known as BBC1’s soap baddy ‘Nasty Nick’ in Eastenders. He will lead an all-star cast playing the wicked role of ‘Abanazar’.
Also appearing is Paul Laidlaw who will play Widow Twankey. Paul, a Gordon Craig pantomime veteran is also director of the magical production. Other talented performers who will be returning to the venue include Craig Perry who will play Aladdin after appearing in ‘Footloose – the Musical’ and Kate Burrell who will play the Genie of the Ring after portraying the role of Fairy Sugarsnap in last year’s pantomime of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. The Gordon Craig also welcomes Laura Emmitt who will star in the role of Princess Jasmine, Tom Beard who will play Aladdin’s best friend, Wishee Washee; Phil Holden who will play the buoyant Genie of the Lamp and Junix Inocian who will play the Emperor of China.
