The National Youth Jazz Orchestra

NYJO is well known throughout the world as a glittering showcase for the country’s best young musicians. Since 1965 most of the rising generation of jazz musicians have passed through its ranks, often becoming established stars whilst still playing with NYJO. Under its founding Musical Director, Bill Ashton MBE, NYJO has performed many hundreds of concerts all over Britain.

A NYJO concert can be enjoyed by non-jazz audiences as well as jazz aficionados of all ages. NYJO have performed at the Gordon Craig Theatre at least 20 times over the years. Their performances attract strong support locally. Some of NYJO’s players originate from the area, including Sarah Ellen Hughes who has been NYJO’s lead vocalist and voice coach for many years.
