Piazolla is perhaps the most important tango composer of the 20th century having developed a unique Latin American tango infused with European jazz and classical elements. His works combine many different elements and these two pieces are excellent examples of Piazzolla’s truly passionate and gritty style. Golijov’s work for string orchestra is conceived as an idealized bandoneon of which Piazzolla was maestro performer.

Lesser known than his other works, Stravinsky’s Concerto in D is one of his most bright and accessible works. Like other works in the programme it features several dance elements and has often been arranged for ballet. Vivaldi’s Oboe Concerto has crisp dance-like movements with dramatic flourishes, allowing the soloist to flaunt their virtuosic versatility. As Golijov was inspired by Piazzolla so Bach followed in the style of Vivaldi with all the energy of Vivaldi’s concertos in Bach’s popular Concerto in D minor
